Reroofs

A reroof — a complete strip and re-cover — is what you need when patching no longer makes sense. We carry out around 80 reroofs a year across Hampshire and Dorset, on everything from 1930s semis to contemporary self-builds, all to current British Standards and all under a written 10-year guarantee.

Reroofs — Local Roof Repairs UK Ltd in Hampshire & Dorset

What's included

  • Full strip of existing tiles, battens and felt down to rafters
  • Structural rafter inspection with written report
  • Modern breathable membrane upgrade (replaces 1F felt)
  • New CE-marked treated softwood battens to BS 5534
  • Tile reuse if sound, or full upgrade — concrete, clay or slate
  • Lead, ridge, hip, valley and verge details fully renewed

The hidden killer on most older roofs is not the tiles — it's the underlay. Bituminous 1F felt installed before the mid-1980s typically lasts 30–40 years before it cracks, sags and starts trapping moisture against the battens. Once the felt has gone, every storm pushes water past the tiles and into the roof structure, and no amount of tile replacement will fix it.

A reroof solves this for the next 50 years. We lift the existing covering, inspect every rafter, replace anything compromised, install a modern breathable membrane that lets moisture out without letting water in, batten to current British Standards and re-cover with your choice of tile.

Where the existing tiles are sound (often the case with natural slate and hand-made clay), we carefully clean and reuse them — saving you several thousand pounds and keeping the original character of the roof. Where they're not, we'll quote a like-for-like replacement and an upgrade option side by side.

Frequently asked

Reroofs questions, answered honestly.

Reroof or repair — how do I know which I need?

If you've had three or more separate repairs in five years, or your underlay felt is sagging/torn, a reroof is almost always cheaper over 10 years than continued patching. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense.

Can I keep my existing slates?

Often yes. Welsh slate routinely outlasts the nails that fix it — we lift, sort, clean and re-fix the sound ones with new copper nails, and only buy in matching reclaimed slates for the few that have failed.

Do you upgrade the loft insulation at the same time?

Yes — Building Regulations require it on a full reroof and it's the cheapest time to do it. We install rigid PIR between rafters or top up quilt insulation at ceiling level, depending on what suits your home.

"Storm Isha took a dozen tiles off our roof on a Sunday afternoon. Mike answered the phone himself, was on site within two hours, tarped the whole side that night and had the permanent repair done the following Tuesday. He showed me photos before and after, talked me through the insurance claim, and didn't take a penny until I was happy. You don't get service like that any more."

Southampton, Hampshire · Storm damage repair · March 2026
"We had three roofers quote for stripping and re-covering our 1970s detached. Mike was the only one who actually got up on the roof with a ladder, lifted tiles, checked the battens and showed me where the felt had perished. His quote wasn't the cheapest but it was the only honest one. The job took five days, the skip was emptied daily, and the lads even hoovered the loft when they were done."

Bournemouth, Dorset · Full re-roof — concrete tile · February 2026
"Re-roofed our 1930s semi in natural Welsh slate. Mike sourced reclaimed slates that matched the next-door neighbour's roof exactly so the terrace still looks uniform. The leadwork around the chimney is a piece of art. Two of our neighbours have already booked him in."

Winchester, Hampshire · Welsh slate re-roof · January 2026
"Our extension flat roof had been patched four times by the original builder and still leaked. Mike stripped it back to the deck, found rotten OSB nobody had mentioned, replaced it, upgraded the insulation and installed a one-piece EPDM membrane. Two heavy storms since and not a drop. Fair price, immaculate finish."

Poole, Dorset · Flat roof — EPDM rubber · January 2026
"Damp patch on the chimney breast turned out to be failed flashing and 60-year-old mortar. Mike rebuilt the top three courses, fitted new code 5 lead step flashing and repointed the whole stack. He even rebedded a wobbly pot I hadn't asked about, no extra charge. A proper tradesman."

Christchurch, Dorset · Chimney repointing & lead flashing · December 2025
"Two surveyors had told us our house was unmortgageable because of the spray foam in the loft. Mike removed the lot in three days, gave us a full written report with photos of every rafter, and the next surveyor signed it off without a fuss. Sale completed last week. Genuinely life-changing service."
