Tiles & Slate Replacement

Like-for-like tile and natural slate replacement on any roof — concrete, clay or Welsh slate — properly matched, properly fixed and properly weathered in. Matching old tiles is a craft most general builders simply don't have. We do.

Tiles & Slate Replacement — Local Roof Repairs UK Ltd in Hampshire & Dorset

What's included

  • Concrete interlocking tile replacement (Marley, Redland, Sandtoft, Russell)
  • Clay plain tile and pantile sourcing & laying
  • Natural Welsh, Spanish and Cumbrian slate
  • Reclaimed and hand-made tile sourcing for heritage roofs
  • Ridge, hip, valley and verge detail repairs
  • Like-for-like colour and weathering match

Modern concrete tiles look almost identical when new but weather very differently after 20 years. A fresh tile dropped into a 30-year-old roof can stand out like a sore thumb. We carry a stock of pre-weathered and reclaimed tiles, and we'll often source matching tiles from architectural reclamation yards across the South of England to make a repair genuinely invisible.

On natural slate roofs, we always nail with copper or stainless — never galvanised, which corrodes within a decade. On clay we use the right gauge and lap for the pitch, and we re-bed ridges in a flexible mortar mix that won't crack with the seasonal movement of the timbers.

Every tile or slate goes back with the correct fixing for the wind uplift zone — clipped, nailed or both, in line with BS 5534 (2014 amendment). The result is a repair that disappears into the rest of the roof and stays there.

Frequently asked

Tiles & Slate Replacement questions, answered honestly.

What if my tiles are no longer made?

We'll source reclaimed tiles or specify the closest current equivalent and pre-weather them on site. We've matched tiles dating back to the 1890s.

Can you match a Welsh slate roof?

Yes — Welsh slate from Penrhyn and Cwt-y-Bugail quarries is still produced, and reclaimed Welsh is widely available. We'll size, dress and nail to match the original.

Do replacement tiles need to be clipped?

Under BS 5534 (2014 amendment), yes — every tile in the perimeter zone and a percentage of the field area. We always work to current standard regardless of what the original roof was built to.

"Storm Isha took a dozen tiles off our roof on a Sunday afternoon. Mike answered the phone himself, was on site within two hours, tarped the whole side that night and had the permanent repair done the following Tuesday. He showed me photos before and after, talked me through the insurance claim, and didn't take a penny until I was happy. You don't get service like that any more."

Southampton, Hampshire · Storm damage repair · March 2026
"We had three roofers quote for stripping and re-covering our 1970s detached. Mike was the only one who actually got up on the roof with a ladder, lifted tiles, checked the battens and showed me where the felt had perished. His quote wasn't the cheapest but it was the only honest one. The job took five days, the skip was emptied daily, and the lads even hoovered the loft when they were done."

Bournemouth, Dorset · Full re-roof — concrete tile · February 2026
"Re-roofed our 1930s semi in natural Welsh slate. Mike sourced reclaimed slates that matched the next-door neighbour's roof exactly so the terrace still looks uniform. The leadwork around the chimney is a piece of art. Two of our neighbours have already booked him in."

Winchester, Hampshire · Welsh slate re-roof · January 2026
"Our extension flat roof had been patched four times by the original builder and still leaked. Mike stripped it back to the deck, found rotten OSB nobody had mentioned, replaced it, upgraded the insulation and installed a one-piece EPDM membrane. Two heavy storms since and not a drop. Fair price, immaculate finish."
Tom & Jenny H.
Poole, Dorset · Flat roof — EPDM rubber · January 2026
"Damp patch on the chimney breast turned out to be failed flashing and 60-year-old mortar. Mike rebuilt the top three courses, fitted new code 5 lead step flashing and repointed the whole stack. He even rebedded a wobbly pot I hadn't asked about, no extra charge. A proper tradesman."

Christchurch, Dorset · Chimney repointing & lead flashing · December 2025
"Two surveyors had told us our house was unmortgageable because of the spray foam in the loft. Mike removed the lot in three days, gave us a full written report with photos of every rafter, and the next surveyor signed it off without a fuss. Sale completed last week. Genuinely life-changing service."
